ElectroBluesSociety feat Boo Boo Davis – Smokestack Lightnin ElectroBluesSociety feat Boo Boo Davis – Dust My Broom

Here are another couple of download singles for KuvVer Records, again featuring the Mississippi bluesman, singer and harmonica blower Boo Boo Davis. He is in excellent form on Howling Wolf’s classic, ‘Smokestack Lightnin’, taken at the same tempo but with a slightly different accompaniment (though not too far away from the familiar version). This has a ghostly echo-like sound in the background; for those who remember cassette tapes, it is a little like when the reverse side used to “bleed through”. Boo Boo’s vocal is of course first-class! Similar comments can be applied to the cover of the Elmore James classic. There’s no doubt that’s the original inspiration for this rendition, with Jan Mittendoorp broom-dusting away on electric guitar, though even more to the fore is Boo Boo’s excellent, wild blues harp playing, making for another wonderful recording.

This is the fourth track from the recording session that ElectroBluesSociety did with Mississippi blues man Boo Boo Davis. Together they went back to the classic Chicago blues  and this time it’s another Howlin Wolf classic with a little ‘electrofication’

UK review ElectroBluesSociety + Boo Boo Davis

ElectroBluesSociety feat Boo Boo Davis – Tell Me (KuvVer Records 605)

Mississippi born singer and drummer Boo Boo Davis goes back to his roots on this “digital single” from KuvVer Records. He used to sing this Howling Wolf song with The Davis Brothers Band when they played in a juke joint in Saint Louis. Maybe the tough vocal and wailing harmonica were more or less the same, even the loping rhythm, as the electronics are not really in evidence here, meaning that this is just a very fine, down-home blues performance. More please!

review for new single ElectroBluesSociety

There is no better night of the year to return to Sweet Home Chicago than Christmas Eve, Xmas in Chi-town during the Reign of King Richard (Daley) the First (“Too ra loo ra loo ral…”) was a joyous fulcrum week at the bottom of the year filled with food, spirits, parties, singing, crying and fighting. Even now I can close my eyes and fill my sinuses with the heavenborn heat of clean steam rising from the boiled fresh meats which would then swirl and fight with the ancient greasy smoke of the grilled meats at every restaurant vent on the block as I cruised alleys on foot homeward from Maxwell Street on Christmas morning fingering the night’s haul and minding the curves, always minding the curves. Or was it Taylor Street? Too old to care now. Musical giants Jan Mittendorp and Jasper Mortier form ElectroBluesSociety and this week they have teamed with Mississippi bluesman Boo Boo Davis to revive another great song. This time it’s the Elmore James classic, “Dust My Broom,” Enjoy.

review David Philips on Indie Voice Blog

This is what INDIE VOICE BLOG wrote about

David Philips – Acoustic Cover Versions 1 EP

David Philips is no stranger to indie music, or to this blog, as we reviewed his previous release back in May. On this brilliant EP, Philips strips down a pair of classic songs, “Dock of the Bay” and “Hit the Road Jack,” and totally re-imagines a pair of 80’s pop hits, “Freedom” and “Heart of Glass” to create a beautiful and peaceful soundtrack. This one is a treat from start to finish. We only wish there were more than four songs.

Recommendation: Definitely worth adding to your collection.

Biography

Born in 1959 and started playing music (guitar) when he was 14. First acoustic blues / jazz / skilffle and later on electric blues and jazz. Started booking his own bands (and others) in 1988 and founded Crossroads blues agency. Since 1993 his main focus was booking European tours for USA blues artists. In 1997 he founded his own record label (Black and Tan Records) combining the tours and releases of the same artists.

Over the years he played guitar and recorded with a.o. Percy Strother, Smokey Wilson , Byther Smith, Burton Gaar, Roy Roberts, Larry Garner, Boo Boo Davis, Erskine Oglesby, Jody Williams, Roscoe Chenier, Clara McDaniel, Billy Jones, Hosea Leavy. With Boo Boo Davis he recorded 10 CD’s and did more then 1000 live shows on European blues & jazz stages (like Montreux Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, Jazz a Juan and Peer Bluesfestival).

About ten years ago he changed from regular guitar to baritone guitar developing a personal style by combining bass guitar parts with lead guitar parts . You can hear the result on more then hundred tracks that he recorded since 2008 with a.o. Boo Boo Davis and Tangled Eye. Recently he also re-discovered a lot of jazz standards from his time at Hilversum Conservatorium in the 1980’s. Besides playing with Boo Boo Davis he is also active in these musical projects:

ElectroBluesSociety
A duo project together with Jasper Mortier; they both have a broad musical taste and an open mind. Together they are mixing the old with the new; combining 30+ years of live stage experience (on the European blues/roots stages) with modern technologies (loops, samples), video projection and other musical styles. The musical input ranges from Alan Lomax to Roxy Music and from Led Zeppelin to techno.

miXendorp
Remixing the blues ! Expect no ‚music for the millions’ but an original and eclectic mix of blues, jazz, world, funk, techno and all kind of other great music with a beat. BLUES always had a strong BEAT and was intended to get people to dance; now it can be played again at the hippest modern parties, festival and clubs ..…. and still feel down home.

BLu ACiD
Together with fellow musician / producer Mischa den Haring he joined forces in this production unit. In February 2014 they released their first tracks and April 2014 the first album production: a new BOO BOO DAVIS release (What Kind Of Shit Is This?) After this succesful project (with several sync placements in the USA) they did some more projects and these tracks were released on BLu ACiD Records, a subsidiary label of Black and Tan.

Recently he started releasing tracks under his own name;
– instrumental blues tracks on Instrumental Blues Records
– cover versions of jazz standards on KuvVer Records

He has a deep love for American roots music and with all his musical activities his goal has always been KEEPING LIVING MUSIC ALIVE.
